Can we close the gap?

Socioeconomic differences and health inequalities in young people with epilepsy

Young people with epilepsy often have lower education, weaker connections to work, cognitive challenges and psychological problems than their peers. Depression and anxiety are more common, and many report bullying and high school absenteeism. Poor seizure control increases the risk of injuries and sudden, unexpected death (SUDEP).

This is an EpilepsyNett project with data from registries, clinical cohorts and user-driven follow-up. We investigate how epilepsy-related and psychosocial factors affect schooling, employment, health and survival. The goal is to identify causes of inequality and assess whether systematic, user-driven follow-up and better interaction with municipal actors can improve the situation for young people with epilepsy.

The project is supported by the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian Epilepsy Association, and is led by Professor Marte-Helene Bjørk in collaboration with epilepsy researchers from all health regions and Danish partners.
