Safe Treatment for Women Needing Antiseizure Medications
SAFE ASM is a multimodal, translational and epidemiological project investigating how anti-seizure medications affect pregnancy, fetal development and child health.
We combine large-scale health registry data, genetic and epigenetic data, biobanks, and prospective cohorts to elucidate both safety and underlying mechanisms.
The project includes:
- SCAN-AED FAMILY / CPRD MERGE – registry-based safety assessment of newer drugs and combinations in, among others, Nordic and British populations.
- TERAEPI CONT – identification of epigenetic, genetic and pharmacological markers of fetal harm using data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Study.
- LIFETIME EPI – prospective, multinational safety study of new seizure prevention drugs. The Norwegian study arm is led by BergenBrain with hospital partners from all health regions and is also investigating biomarkers and prediction of neurodevelopmental outcomes in children exposed to the drugs during pregnancy.
The goal is to strengthen the knowledge base for individualized, safe treatment choices for pregnant women with epilepsy.
The project is led by Professor Marte-Helene Bjørk and is supported by, among others, the Trond Mohn Research Foundation and DRIV – Center for Women's Health Research.
