SCAN-AED FAMILY builds on the successful SCAN-AED study , led by Professor Marte-Helene Bjørk, which aimed to make epilepsy treatment safer during pregnancy.
SCAN-AED was one of the world's largest projects in the field, linking health registry and socioeconomic data from 30 nationwide registries in five Nordic countries, covering more than 4.5 million pregnancies. The results contributed to changes in European guidelines for the use of topiramate during pregnancy, as well as clinical recommendations for high-dose folic acid for pregnant women using anti-seizure drugs.
In SCAN-AED FAMILY, the approach is expanded to include data from countries outside the Nordic region. The project includes several sub-studies investigating the safety of anti-seizure drugs for mothers, fathers and children.
It is led by professors Marte-Helene Bjørk (UiB), Julie Werenberg Dreier (Aarhus University), Helga Zoega (University of Iceland) and Neda Razaz (Karolinska Institutet), in collaboration with international partners, and is supported by several international organizations.
